Weekend Box Office: Ben Affleck In ‘Gone Girl’ Holds Off All Newcomers, ‘Dracula Untold’ Debuts Number Two Followed By ‘Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day’

This weekend at the box office proved to be a strong and surprising debut for newcomers "Dracula Untold" and "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day," but in it's second week, David Fincher's "Gone Girl" was already too far ahead to be caught.

"A lot of people have said, ‘Well, is it a satire of media?' It's not media, you know, the - CNN and The New York Times and NPR are not in the flower beds of the Dunne house. This is tragedy vampirism, and it's a very different thing," said Oscar nominated director David Fincher to NPR in a recent interview.

Perhaps the "tragedy vampirism" aspect of his latest film "Gone Girl" is what made audiences flock to the theaters for the second weekend in a row, causing the thriller starring Ben Affleck to take first place in the box office. Box Office Pro reports that the film took in another $26.8 million this weekend, making its overall gross around $78 million.

"Gone Girl" may have been number one this weekend, but people under the age of 17 who wanted to hit the theater finally got their wish with the premiere of "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day." The film took the number three spot to gross an estimated $19.1 million. The film is bolstered by it's market to families that have been oversaturated by R-rated films over the past few weekends, and household comedy names Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner.

The real shocker this weekend however was definitely the performance of vampire revisionist tale "Dracula Untold." Box Office Pro's original long forecast had the film pegged to take in the bare minimum, but over the month of September, tracking began to lend itself toward the directorial debut from Gary Shore. "Dracula Untold" raked in about $23.46 million.

All in all, while fans may still generally drive the box office numbers, ultimately giving "Dracula Untold" the number two spot, it's the Oscar buzz worthy critically acclaimed "Gone Girl" that took the number one spot in its second week.
