‘Gone Girl’ Cast Neil Patrick Harris And Husband David Burtka Once Asked To Appear On ‘American Horror Story: Murder House’; Find Out Why They Rejected Offer

Following the announcement that "Gone Girl" cast Neil Patrick Harris would host the Oscars, the 41-year-old actor similarly confirmed that he once got an offer to appear on "American Horror Story: Murder House" with his husband.

However, Neil Patrick Harris and husband David Burtka turned down the offer for they were about to play a dysfunctional couple - something which they already portrayed in the film "A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas."

The couple's refusal to appear on the show's first season led to the casting of Zachary Quinto and Teddy Sears.

"Right after that [Christmas film], we were asked to be in season one of this great new show called 'American Horror Story.' And the idea was that we would be a gay couple, that, as it turns out, were murdered in this house and then our ghosts are around for the thing," he told Entertainment Weekly Radio.

The five-time Primetime Emmy winner said that the project was "cool" but added that "it just felt weird."

"So I said no, that we shouldn't do it. And David wanted to. I said, 'I just don't want us to be known as a couple that don't like each other.' And then wouldn't you know, 'American Horror Story' is a big, gigantic success and super awesome," he explained.

In a previous interview with Vulture, Harris cited his reasons for loving the horror show: "I just watched the end of 'American Horror Story: Coven,' and not only is the content amazing, the conceit of the show, but the people that they have are extraordinary!"

He went on to praise one of the show's lead stars:
Jessica Lange is so good! All of them, they're all uniformly talented. So to get to play in that sandbox would be a great bucket-list moment."

While the "How I Met Your Mother" star refused to appear on the first season, he'd still be seen on "American Horror Story: Freak Show."

"He had very specific ideas of what he wanted to do, and I had very specific ideas, so we're melding them. He's awesome... I would love to see him and Jessica Lange go at it in some intriguing way. Because of his schedule, something we're thinking about, maybe one episode and then another one later on," Ryan Murphy said as reported by E! News.
