Joan Rivers Death Update: NYC Clinic Where Comedienne Died To Lose Accreditation This Month

Following Joan Rivers' death, several questions have been raised about the New York City clinic where she underwent a medical procedure. While such questions haven't been completely addressed, the clinic will be losing its accreditation this month.

"Yorkville Endoscopy no longer meets the conditions for a supplier of ambulatory surgical centre services," said government agency Centres for Medicare Services.

As per the agency, the clinic will no longer receive government funds for those under the Medicare and Medicaid programs as of January 31. Following Joan Rivers' death, the clinic presented several plans to correct problems which were pointed out in an initial investigation.

CMS, however, said that the clinic wasn't able to properly address its four areas: "surgical services; quality assessment and performance improvement; governing body and management; and environment".

Yorkville Endoscopy said that it would exert effort in having the agency's decision reversed: "We intend to communicate with CMS and appropriate authorities to have the decision reversed. Yorkville continues to be a licensed facility and perform procedures while co-operating with the regulatory process."

The "Fashion Police" host passed away last September 4 at the age of 81. The city's medical examiner ruled Joan Rivers' death as a result of brain damage due to lack of oxygen. The comedienne stopped breathing during an endoscopy which was performed days earlier.

While the agency did not cite negligence in its reports about Joan Rivers' death, the television personality's daughter, Melissa Rivers, still opted to hire a malpractice lawyer.
