Producers Of 'Fifty Shades Of Grey' Say Infamous Tampon Scene Is Unnecessary, Film Toned Down To Be Less Racy [PHOTO]

The producers of the upcoming film "Fifty Shades of Grey" have revealed that one scene in particular will be missing - one that involves Christian Grey, Anastasia Steele, and a tampon. The scene involves Christian removing Ana's tampon before having sex, and is likely omitted in order to avoid a rating of NC-17.

According to Variety, director Sam-Taylor Johnson stated, "It didn't make it into the movie... It was never even discussed." Producer Michael De Luca emphasized the film's less literal means, stating, "The book needed to put you in Ana's shoes to be a successful experience. A lot of it was very literal. The movie didn't need to do that. It's a completely different medium."

The Huffington Post reports that the filmmakers had a tough time making raunchier scenes work visually without portraying too much sex overall.  In fact, earlier drafts of the script were toned down through rewrites in order to make "Fifty Shades" less racy.

Screenwriter Kelly Marcel commented, "On the early draft, there was a sense that there was way too much sex. The story, of course, is of equal importance." She continued, "We tried to balance the narrative correctly, so one doesn't feel like it's drowning the other. It's the buildup that's interesting. I feel that in movies, the minute there's penetration, it's all over."

Author E.L. James said of the movie transition, "'Fifty Shades of Grey' is first and foremost a romantic love story, and the sex is only part of that. People who haven't read the books might be surprised that there isn't more sex on the screen, but that's because they've gone by media reports of 'Fifty Shades,' which have tended to err on the side of the sensational. I'm pretty sure the millions of fans who have the read the trilogy will think there is enough sex."
