"She had been unhappy for awhile. She tried to make things work and eventually she just had to walk away. She's trying to keep things civil but is pretty upset about the way he's handling this," said the source to Us Weekly.

Mandy Moore asked for spousal support, which she reportedly believes is the reason why Ryan Adams submitted court documents that listed the date of their separation as August 4, 2014.

"They specifically discussed her filing. [The August 2014 date is] coming from there being no prenup and is financially motivated," the source reportedly said.

The "Someday We'll Know" hit maker allegedly believes that Adams is still trying to make the marriage work.

Mandy Moore and Ryan Adams, who tied the knot in 2009, previously announced their split through a joint statement.

"Mandy Moore and Ryan Adams have mutually decided to end their marriage of almost six years," said the musician couple's representatives to Radar Online. "It is a respectful, amicable parting of ways and both Mandy and Ryan are asking for media to respect their privacy at this time."

The couple never had kids although they adopted seven cats and two dogs. Previously, Mandy Moore even expressed that they'd be interested to adopt a child.

"I definitely want a couple of my own [kids]," Moore told Life and Style magazine and later added, "but I'd like to adopt as well!"

She explained that adoption is good because "there are many children out there that need a nice loving home and future."
