Lupita Nyong'o's Oscar Dress Returned Because Pearls Are Fake? Calvin Klein Says They Never Claimed They're Real

Now, that's a thief with class.

According to new reports, the stolen dress that Lupita Nyong'o wore to the Oscars was returned because the pearls are fake, apparently.

The thief even had the graciousness to call up TMZ on Friday afternoon, recounting how he took out two pearls and had them appraised at the Garment District in L.A.

After learning that the pearls were worthless, the thief returned Lupita Nyong'o's Oscar dress.

"Law enforcement sources tell us ... Calvin Klein's people never told them if the pearls were real or fake. We're told the only person who represented the pearls as real and valued the dress at $150K was Lupita's stylist," it said.

"Did anyone ever say they were real from Calvin Klein? I always assumed everyone knew they were fake, but I guess not," said the source connected to Francisco Costa, Women's Creative Director at Calvin Klein.

"Do they really make dresses out of real jewels since Cleopatra died?" the source added.

Yahoo News reported that the West Hollywood Sheriff's Department also received a call from a "media source," purportedly TMZ, about the stolen Lupita Nyong'o's pearl Oscar dress being in the toilet of a London Hotel where the actress was billeted.

"Hotel staff searched and found the dress in a bag hidden behind a counter in the bathroom. We believe this is the dress stolen from the hotel," Lt. Michael White said.

"We will maintain custody of the dress until a rep from the company or the victim comes to claim it. We have lots of interesting things that happen in West Hollywood, we gave it the same attention we give any other case. It's just another day in West Hollywood," the detective added.

Police are reviewing the surveillance videos to try to find the culprit. As of this time, police haven't identified the culprit who stole Lupita Nyong'o's pearl Oscar dress.
