'Winds Of Winter' Release Date Clamor Overshadowed By George R.R. Martin's Spoilers? Author Sets Eyes On Shocking But Organic And Natural Twist

Fans clamoring for "Winds of Winter" release date gets this bit of good news: George R. R. Martin is hell bent on finishing the book before season 6 of "Game of Thrones." The author also released a 6,000-word spoiler on his website focusing on Sansa Stark.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, George R. R. Martin revealed that he always wanted to finish "Winds of Winter" before season 6 because the events of the HBO hit series are catching up with the novels.

"I wish it was out now. Maybe I'm being overly optimistic about how quickly I can finish. But I canceled two convention appearances, I'm turning down a lot more interviews-anything I can do to clear my decks and get this done," he said.

For those who are eagerly anticipating the "Winds of Winter" release date, the author teased on his website a chapter on Sansa Stark, now posing as Alayne Stone, with Lord Robert Arryn determined to marry her.

"Yes, I know, I'd said there would be no more sample chapters, but (1) it had been more than a year since Mercy, (2) lots of you were asking, and (3) Anne Groell and my friends at Bantam twisted my arm," the author said in his blog.

Meanwhile, George R. R. Martin told ET that he's seriously considering a "great twist" on a major character that would shock fans.

"This is going to drive your readers crazy but I love it," he said. "I'm still weighing whether to go that direction or not. It's a great twist. It's easy to do things that are shocking or unexpected, but they have to grow out of characters."

"They have to grow out of situations. Otherwise, it's just being shocking for being shocking. But this is something that seems very organic and natural, and I could see how it would happen."

"And with the various three, four characters involved... it all makes sense. But it's nothing I've ever thought of before. And it's nothing they can do in the show, because the show has already-on this particular character-made a couple decisions that will preclude it, where in my case I have not made those decisions," the author added.

George R. R. Martin, however, did not specify a target date for the "Winds of Winter" release date.
