Asteroid Worth $195B: Scientists Say It Will Come Closer To Earth Than Any Comet or Asteroid in History [PHOTO]

An asteroid worth an estimated $195b is speeding towards the earth right now.

On February 15, the $195b asteroid named 2012 DA14 will fly 17,200 miles from the earth's surface, or one thirteenth of the distance from the earth to the moon, making it the closest any asteroid or comet has ever come to our home planet.

The company Deep Space Industries, which is developing technology to mine asteroids, estimates the asteroid worth at $195 billion. Which is exactly why his company is taking the idea of harvesting asteroids very seriously.

"While this week's visitor isn't going the right way for us to harvest it, there will be others that are, and we want to be ready when they arrive," Rick Tumlinson, chairman of Deep Space Industries, told webpronews.

Tumlinson's company's determination that the asteroid is worth $195b is based on NASA's estimation it is 150 feet across (roughly half the size of a football field).

The Deep Space Industries experts say if only 10 percent of the asteroid was made of minable metals that would be good for $130 billion. If five percent of the asteroid is comprised of water that would mean the asteroid could produce another $65b in rocket fuel.

Tumlinson believes mining traveling space rocks like the $195b asteroid speeding towards earth will change the future of space travel, opening up the possibilities to go greater distances as ships could refuel in deep space.

"Even with conservative estimates of the potential value of any given asteroid, if we begin to utilize them in space they are all the equivalent of a space oasis for refueling and resupply," he said.

Deep Space Industries will be sending its Dragon Fly probe to collect samples of the asteroid worth $195b. They will also continue to send their Fire Fly probe to examine other asteroids. The company hopes to be mining asteroids by 2020.

One of the hurdles in space mining is the speed they asteroids travel. 2012 DA14 is no exception. The $195b asteroid will be moving at 17,400 miles per hour.

Considering that at that speed the asteroid could reach earth within an hour from where it will pass our planet, we better hope that astronomer's predictions are correct.
