The former LAPD officer Christopher Dorner body has been positively identified in the remains of the California mountain cabin, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

Spokeswoman Jodi Miller said that Dorner's dental records were used to identify the remains. No cause of death has been provided.

Following the identification of the remains LAPD personnel who were protecting fellow officers that were threatened by Dorner are now being sent back to their normal duties, Chief Charlie Beck said.

"We've taken away the p rotection details," Beck told The Times. "We are very concerned about the mental well-being of some of people being protected and their families," he said, adding that the department would provide counseling services.

The announcement has brought the end to a massive manhunt, the fugitive died Tuesday at the end of an hour-long gun battle and flames engulfed the cabin.

Big Bear Lake Mayor Jay Obernolte said he was relieved that the manhunt was over. The area was "freed of the sense of being a community that is not safe because there is a cop-killer hiding in our little mountain town."
