Facebook Says it was Hacked Last Month, 'No User Data was Compromised'

Social media company Facebook today announced that it was hacked last month by an unidentified hacker group.

"This attack occurred when a handful of employees visited a mobile developer website that was compromised," the company said in their blog post. "The compromised website hosted an exploit which then allowed malware to be installed on these employee laptops."

The popular social network with more than one billion active users worldwide said, "Facebook was not alone in this attack. It is clear that others were attacked and infiltrated recently as well."

"Foremost, we have found no evidence that Facebook user data was compromised," the company said.

The announcement follows recent cyber-attacks of Twitter, as well as newspaper website such as The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal. Rupert Murdoch pointed to the Chinese government.

Even though Facebook assures no user data was compromised, this latest incident raises major concerns about all the personal information people share online.

Facebook identified the attack as "zero day" Java exploit that bypass the built-in protections to install the software. Oracle was notified of this vulnerability and it "confirmed our findings and provided a patch on February 1, 2013 that addresses this vulnerability."

Facebook said it is in cooperation with law enforcement and worked with other organizations that were victims of the same exploit.
