Macklemore Admits Drug Addiction Relapse; Rapper Says Stress Of Fame Caused It!

Macklemore's drug addiction relapse last year was probably something he could have avoided but didn't, according to Us Weekly.

The magazine noted that the recovering addict had a breakout 2014. His album, "The Heist", won the 2014 Grammy for Best Rap Album. It also earned Macklemore and collaborator Ryan Lewis the Best New Artist Award. Overall, he won four Grammys that year, not to mention a handful of singles that hit number one in the charts.

However, it appears that a retreat back to his native Seattle, Washington to work on new music proved to be the catalyst for his relapse. Apparently, the rapper, who is Ben Haggerty in real life, found himself slipping back to his old habits while crafting the new album.

In his cover story for the August/September issue of "Complex", the "Thrift Shop" singer opened up about his recent relapse.

"I don't feel like I'm grown up. I feel like I'm a kid," he told the magazine. "I feel like I'm the 15-year-old kid down the street, trying to escape, get out of class, smoke weed in the street, and kick it. And that's a version of myself that I don't feel that far removed from."

According to the interview, Macklemore's most recent drug addiction relapse involved smoking weed and taking pills.

"I held it together for a while," he said. "But, eventually, I stopped going to my 12-step meetings."

The "Same Love" singer attributed his relapse to the trappings of his new life.

"I was burnt out. I was super-stressed. We weren't sleeping - doing a show every day, zigzagging all over the country. In terms of the media I was getting put into a box that I never saw for myself. The pressure and the fame - everything...I just wanted to escape," the 32-year-old rapper explained.

Macklemore claims his fiancée, Tricia Davis, was his means for recovery. Apparently, Davis caught him with pills hidden in a shoe. Then, earlier this year, he learned that Davis was pregnant with his child.

According to USA Today, that was the wake-up call the rapper needed, and he has resumed attending his 12-step meeetings.

"The sobriety was the wake-up call that I needed," he said. "And, as it always works, the minute that I start actively seeking recovery-not just sobriety, but recovery-music is there. It always has been."

Macklemore's drug addiction recovery is in perfect timing with the production of his latest collaboration with Lewis, which he said is three-quarters finished and due out before the year ends.
