The 'Clone Wars' Canceled on Cartoon Network After Five Seasons, 'We Had An Amazing Run!'

Lucasfilm announced on Monday they are ending production of "Clone Wars" on the Cartoon Network that spent five seasons earning raves.

"After five highly successful and critically acclaimed seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, we feel the time has come to wind down the series," Lucasfilm announced on Monday. "While the studio is no longer producing new episodes for Cartoon Network, we're continuing production on new 'Clone Wars' story arcs that promise to be some of the most thrilling adventures ever seen."

The cancelation of the animated series comes as the company moves forward in a new direction.

"As we enter into an exciting new era focused on the next 'Star Wars' trilogy, Lucasfilm has decided to pursue a new direction in animated programming," the statement said. "We are exploring a whole new 'Star Wars' series set in a time period previously untouched in 'Star Wars' films or television programming. You can expect more details in the months to come."

The series debuted in 2008 receiving rave reviews from both critics and fans throughout its run. "Thank you to the fans and everyone who made the Star Wars Clone Wars so special. We had an amazing run!! 5 seasons of Star Wars awesomeness," tweeted Matt Lanter.

As part of the new direction it also postponed the "Star Wars Detours" cartoon comedy series as the company explains that the decision to continue the trilogy led them to reconsider "whether launching an animated comedy prior to the launch of 'Episode VII' makes sense. As a result, we've decided to postpone the release of 'Detours' until a later date."

Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill were all revealed to be returning for the seventh film according to George Lucas, directed by "Star Trek's" J.J. Abrams while aiming for a 2015 release.
