Sistine Chapel Has Opened; Conclave Concluded, Pope Francis I Elected As First Jesuit, 'New World' Leader Of Catholic Church

Just two days after the doors to the Sistine Chapel were closed and conclave began, the 115 Cardinals came to an agreement and voted Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio as the new Pope.

He will be known as Pope Francis I the 266th leader of the Roman Catholic Church. Cardinal Bergoglio was the Archbishop of Buenos Aires and the first pope in history not born in Europe.

There is a lot of pomp and circumstance surrounding the election of a new Pope, and one tradition involved in the ceremony is the sealing of the conclave within the Sistine Chapel.

The Sistine Chapel is one of the most famous buildings in the world and one of the most important to the Italian Renaissance. It houses the famous frescos by Michelangelo on the ceiling of the building.

Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo when he wanted to renovate the decoration of the ceiling. It took the artist four years to paint the frescos on the ceiling.

This week visitors to the Sistine Chapel were looking up at the building not to admire the art but to find out who would become the new leader of the Catholic Church.

After the first vote Wednesday morning reveled there had been no decision, the world patiently waiting for the second vote of the day.

Even the animal kingdom was curious about the new pontiff. A seagull sat perched on of the chimney where the famous white smoke billows out of the Sistine Chapel, for most of the day.

Suddenly the bird was as much news as the election and even had the attention of CNN's Anderson Cooper. The white bird seemed to predict the news of the day, when the white smoke came up out of the chimney.
