New York Suspected Gunman Killed By Police And FBI In Shootout Inside An Abandoned Building

The suspected gunman of Wednesday's mass shooting in upstate NY was reportedly killed in a shootout with police and FBI Thursday.

The suspect, identified as Kurt Myers, 64, was holed up in a building in Herkimer, New York, where he had barricaded himself the previous day, New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico said at a press conference, acccording to the news agency Reuters.

D'Amico said that as the authorities entered the first floor of the abandoned building on Thursday morning, the gunman, described as a loner, opened fire on them, striking and killing an FBI police dog. The gunman was then shot and killed by authorities.

"He engaged them almost immediately," D'Amico said. "It all took place shortly before 8 a.m. this morning, and it all unfolded and concluded in a matter of minutes. We know he had the shotgun with him that he used in yesterday's attacks."

Myers allegedly killed four people and wounded two others during a shooting spree that started in Herkimer, NY and continued in the nearby town of Mohawk.

Myers allegedly killed two men inside a barber shop in the Ohio town of Herkimer, a town with a population under 8,000.

"Totally unprovoked, we believe he fired a number of rounds from the shotgun," D'Amico said on Wednesday.

Myers also allegedly shot the owner of the shop and a customer, both reportedly remain in critical condition.

Myers allegedly went from Herkimer to Mohawk, which is a town located on the other side of the Mohawk River where he killed two more people at a car wash.

The serial killer's home in Herkimer reportedly caught fire Wednesday morning while the shootings were taking place.

Police said they did not know of a motive behind the shooting sprees.

"The violence that was inflicted yesterday on these victims was horrible," D'Amico said.
