Cynthia Wachenheim Jumped 8 Stories To her Death While Holding Her Baby Son, Who Survived

On Wednesday afternoon Cynthia Wachenheim wrote a thirteen page suicide note, then placed her baby boy in a harness around her chest and leapt 8 stories to her death from her Harlem, New York apartment.

The note was not signed but police were able to confirm Cynthia Wachenheim wrote it based on hand writing comparisons. In the note, Wachenheim said she believed she was a bad mother and that she knew what she was about to do was "evil.

But Wachenheim, who may have been suffering from postpartum depression, was concerned about the way her son Keston was developing. Wachenhiem was convinced her baby had cerebral palsy although the doctors say the child showed no signs of that disease.

Steven Dominguez told the New York Daily News he had seen the entire tragedy unfold. "I heard a scream when she was in the air. I noticed something falling, but I didn't want to believe it was a person.

"Wachemheim hit the ground on Bradhurst Avenue Keston bounced off of his mother's chest on impact and rolled a few feet away.

"It was like a loud bang," Dominguez told the Daily News about when Wachemheim landed on the ground, "it sounded like a big piece of wood hitting the floor."

When he got close to Wachemheim's body he noticed the 10-month-old baby crying. The child was taken to Harlem Hospital where he is reported to be in stable condition.

Neighbors heard Cynthia Wachenheim and her husband 48-year-old Hal Bacharach arguing just hours before she leapt to her death. Bacharach was seen on video storming out of the apartment.

Neighbors described Wachenheim as a "good mom." They fought off tears speaking about the tragedy to the Daily News.
