Frank Thornton Dies At 92: Captain Peacock Of ‘Are You Being Served?’ Dies Peacefully In Sleep In London

British actor Frank Thornton has died at age 92.

David Daly, his agent, announced on Monday that Frank Thornton died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Barnes, London on Saturday, March 16.

Frank Thornton played Captain Peacock in the television department store sitcom "Are You Being Served?"

In addition to this role, Thornton made many other comedic performances. He was well known for his role as Truly in "Last of the Sumer Wine".

Thornton starred in "Hancock's Half Hour," "The Goodies," and "Steptoe and Son." He also made an appearance in the film "Gosford Park."

However, Thornton was best known as Captain Stephen Peacock, a store walker who was very uptight and often bragged about his wartime adventures in the sitcom "Are You Being Served?" according to Reuters.

The sitcom ran for 13 years, from 1972 to 1985. It was based in the fictional department store called 'Grace Brothers' in London.

The series was popular in the United States, aired on PBS stations and on BBC America.

Thornton is survived by his wife of 67 years, Beryl, his daughter Jane and three grandchildren.
