Michelle Shocked Slur: Venues Protest Anti-Gay Slur And Comments Against Gay Marriage By Canceling Singer's Future Shows

Singer Michelle Shocked made an anti-gay slur in a San Francisco concert.

Michelle Shocked, born Karen Michelle Johnson, considers herself a born-again Christian and on stage reportedly said "God 'hates' gays".

The slur Michelle Shocked, who specializes in alternative folk and rock, made resulted in several of her shows being cancelled.

Yoshi's San Francisco Director of Marketing Lisa Bautista said that Shocked had just begun her second set on the night of Sunday, March 17 when she made the offensive comments that included the slur, according to the Associated Press.

The Chicago Tribune reported that Shocked yelled at the San Francisco crowd, "You can go on Twitter and say, 'Michelle Shocked says God hates [anti-gay slur]." Shocked also said that legalizing gay marriage would end the world.

While Michelle Shocked was still talking, the venue cut off her microphone, dimmed the lights and announced that the show was over.

Bautista told the AP that people in the audience asked Shocked to stop making the offensive comments and slurs before walking out of the show.

Before Shocked made the slurs, she was scheduled to perform at the Hopmonk Tavern in Novato on March 29.

The Marin Independent Journal reported that the Hopmonk show was cancelled, in addition to four other shows.

Shocked was banned from a concert venue in Evanstan, Illinois, where she was scheduled to perform on May 5.

The venue SPACE, following Shocked's slur, posted on its site and Facebook, "After speaking with the promoter of that show about the nature of the remarks, it's clear that this is no longer a show we're willing to put our name on."

The venue is offering refunds to people who purchased tickets.

Shocked and her manager haven't responded to the AP's request for comment.
