Parents Forgive Neighbor Who Killed Their Son On Sunday: They Don't 'Blame' The Neighbor For Shooting The 16-Year-Old

Parents forgive neighbor who shot and killed their teenage son in Virginia on Sunday.

16-year-old Caleb Gordley died Sunday in Sterling, Va. when he was shot by his neighbor two doors down, the Associated Press reported.  His parents, Shawn and Jennea Gordley, forgive the neighbor and don't even blame them for the incident.

"I don't even blame the gentleman," Jennea Gordley said at a press conference outside their northern Virginian home. "I don't know what I would have done."

The Gordely parents said Caleb sneaked out of the house Saturday night and went out drinking with some of his friends. When he returned, he accidentally went into a home that looked like his.

Inside the house, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office, the homeowner called 911 to report an intruder, confronted Caleb and fatally shot him.

The shooter has not been identified, the AP reported. Property records showed that the home that has a similar look to the Gordley's place is owned by Donald West Wilder II. He's a volunteer firefighter, but has been unreached for comment.

Press releases from the sheriff's office indicate that they were called to the scene on reports that a homeowner had fired shots at an intruder.

Shawn Gordley acknowledged he was angry at first with what happened. He had a lot of questions, including wanting who would kill his son and why? the AP reported.

"But the more I looked for answers, the more it hurt," he said at the press conference. "All the answers in the world are not going to bring him back."

Caleb's parents said the teen was grounded Saturday night, but snuck out of the home to attend a party in the neighborhood.

"I'm not the strictest father, but I have a lot of rules," he said.

Caleb and his friends walked back after the party and tried to sneak Caleb back in the house at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday. They ended up in the backyard of their neighbor, who has a similar home and fenced-in backyard. The Gordleys moved to their Sterling home last May. Most of the two-story single-family homes on the street have similar features, the AP reported.

In a phone interview Tuesday, Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman said the shooting involves a "tragic set of circumstances." He added,"My heart just breaks for this family."

During the press conference Tuesday, Caleb's parents said complications during their son's birth threatened the life of both Caleb and Jennea.

"We got 16½ awesome years out of this young man," Shawn Gordley said. "We could have had none."
