Ahmadinejad Nearly Shot: Secret Service Agent Accidentally Discharges Gun At Iranian President Ahmadinejad

A new book by Marc Ambinder and D.B Grady called "Deep State: Inside the Government Secrecy Industry" details the incident when a secrecy service agent at nearly shot Iranian President Ahmadinejad.

At a 2006 United Nations Assembly, a secret service agent was adjusting a gun mounted on the side of President Bush's motorcade. The gun was accidentally fired in the direction of the Iranian President Ahmadinejad, nearly shooting him.

According to the Daily Mail, the almost international incident was recorded in a memo and passed around to a dozen high ranking Bush administration officials.

The book cites a Bush official as saying, "When I read that, I remember closing my eyes. When the shot was fired everyone just stopped. The Iranians looked at us and we looked at the Iranians. The agent began to apologize. Ahmandinejad just turned his head and got into his car."

The book also claims the Bush administration was afraid that the Iranian President might claim the United States secret service tried to assassinate him during the United Nations conference, but he said nothing. Until now the public did not know about the near shooting of Ahmandinejad.

A reporter for Reuters, Anthony De Rose tweeted, "the secret service did not almost shoot Ahmadinejad, but an agent accidentally discharged a shotgun in his proximity."

Information such as the agent's name or any consequences he may have faced after nearly shooting Ahmadinejad are unknown.

"Deep State: Inside the Government Secrecy Industry" will be available for purchase in April.
