Vera Wang $500 Try On Fee? China Boutique Charging Customers For Wedding Dresses, Fee Surprised Vera Wang's Team Also

Designer Vera Wang's new boutique in Shanghai is supposedly charges 3,000 yuan (almost $500) for bride just to try on the gown for 90 minutes.

According to the Global Times, this is the only Vera Wang store with this police.

The designer loved by many fans back in mainland due to her Chinese and Shanghainese roots calling the practice as "unbearable," "a naughty scheme," and kind of racist.

The Global Times cited a press release from the Vera Wang Bridal House Ltd. explains the charge is to "protect the copyright of the designer." The statement includes that it forbids customers taking photos in the store.

It might not be such a surprise as counterfeiting is rampant in China for the fashion industry, so Wang would want to take measures against from keeping her designs from being reproduced. Red-Luxury notes that such try-on fees can be found in several Hong Kong bridal shops, however such policy is certainly not the norm worldwide.

Refinery29 reports today, Priya Shukla, vice president of public relations at Vera Wang stating the news "was surprising to us too. The activity of one of our international partners was brought to our attention."

"We are reviewing this carefully and taking measures to ensure all of our stores offer the same standard of excellence worldwide," she added.
