Giant Egg for Sale: Fossilized Elephant Bird Egg Up For Auction At Christie's Next Month

A giant egg of the extinct Elephant Bird is up for sale at Christie's in London next month.

Elephant bird eggs are the world's largest, even larger than dinosaur eggs. The fossilized egg was found in Madagascar before the giant elephant bird became extinct.

Christie's said Wednesday the giant egg was laid several hundred years ago, before elephant birds were wiped out. The 12-inch fossilized egg is expected to sell up to 30,000 pounds (roughly $45,000).

The egg a foot long, nearly nine inches in diameter is 120 times larger than a chicken egg. It was reported to have been discovered by archeologists in the late 1800s or early 1900s.

The Elephant Bird became extinct around 13th and 17th centuries, they were the largest bird to have ever lived, resembling a heavily-built ostrich and was 11-feet tall.

The auction takes place during a travel and science sale in London on April 24.
