Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Wants To Coach UCLA Next Season: Does The NBA Legend Have What It Takes?

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is a candidate to be the next men's basketball coach for UCLA.

It is rumored that UCLA is looking at one of its own legendary players to fill the vacancy for the head coaching position, according to Yahoo!

Abdul-Jabbar publicly announced that he wants the job. He announced is on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" Wednesday. He then went to radio to voice his desire as UCLA head coach.

"I've been lobbying for the job and I want the job," Abdul-Jabbar told Fox Sports Radio's Jay Mohr Thursday. "Hopefully I'll find out in short order what's going on there."

Ben Howland was fired Monday as the head coach of the UCLA Bruins after being eliminated from the 2013 National Championship Tournament.

His head coaching experience consist of leading the Oklahoma Storm to the USBL title in 2002, Yahoo! reported. He has never coached at the college level, nor does he have any experience or contacts as a recruiter.

Abdul-Jabbar was drafted number one overall in the 1969 NBA draft to the Milwaukee Bucks.

The 65-year-old legend was born, Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor, Jr. on April 16, 1947. With his birthday coming up, he might be the next head coach of where he won three national championships.

In 1974, Abdul-Jabbar was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he won six NBA titles, six regular-season MVP awards and two Finals MVP during his six title reigns.
