WWE Lawsuit Settled, Finally 14 Years After Owen Hart’s Death, Over Late Wrestler’s Image

The WWE lawsuit was finally settled Wednesday, 14 years after the death of Owen Hart.

Martha Hart filed a suit against the WWE back in June of 2010 over the royalties concerning using the late wrestler's image.

Today it was announced that WWE chief executive Vince McMahon and wife and former CEO Linda McMahon had reached an agreement with Martha Hart. The details of the settlement were not disclosed.

Owen Hart's spouse sued WWE and McMahons accusing them of using the late wrestler's name and images without their expressed permission, even when asked to cease and desist.

"Martha Hart does not have some exclusive right to the story of her husband; it's just that simple," the defendants said in response to the civil action.

A portion of the lawsuit reads, "Since Owen's death, the WWE and McMahons have sought every available opportunity to further exploit Owen's personality for their own commercial benefit. Their use of Owen's name and likeness draws attention to the WWE's ongoing violent and highly questionable theatrical activities that caused Owen's death."

Owen Hart died in a tragic accident in 1999 during a stunt on the ring at Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri. Portraying a superhero character known as the Blue Blazer, he repelled from the ceiling into the ring when the bungee slipped, he fell nearly 50 feet to his death.
