Michelle Wie Accepts Apology From Annika Sorenstam Over Harsh Interview Comments; Sorenstam Said Wie “Has A Long Way To Go”

Michelle Wie accepted an apology from Annika Sorenstam over comments the latter made in an interview with Golf Magazine.

Michelle Wie said, "She actually reached out to me last night, said a couple of things got misquoted. I thought that was nice of her to reach out to me. She apologized for what she said, and that's that," Wie said on Thursday, April 4 after her first round in the Kraft Nabisco Championship.

Sorenstam's offending comments appeared in a question-and-answer story in Golf magazine's May issue.

When asked how Sorenstam could be misquoted in a question-and-answer format, Wie said, "I didn't read it, so I don't know what she said," according to the Associated Press.

The 23-year-old child prodigy has been off her golf game since she won the 2010 Canadian Women's Open, bringing Wie's total LPGA Tour titles to two. In five events this year, Wie has missed three cuts and played poorly in two no-cut events in Asia, according to the AP.

On Thursday at Mission Hills, Wie shot an even-par 72, and has broken 70 only once in 15 rounds this season. She closed with a 69 in Singapore after a 77 in the third round.

Wie participated in her first major, the Kraft Nabisco Championship, when she was just 13 years old. She is now a Stanford University graduate.

Sorenstam said, "What I see now is that the talent that we all thought would be there is not there," of Wie in the magazine article.

Sorenstam, who has been inducted into the Golf Hall of Fame, added that Wie's participation in men's tournaments hasn't helped her golf game.

"I don't think it helped her career. I think we see some of it today. I think she jumped in way too deep, and I think it had some tough consequences for her," Sorenstam added.

Sorenstam was asked if she thought Wie could still become the best golf player in the world.

She answered, "She has a long way to go, let's put it that way. There was a time when the LPGA really needed her. I thought she had a lot to bring to the table. Now she's one out of many."
