A Wife Was Killed By Her Husband In Phoenix Because Of HIV Scare And Her Son Killed By Husband As Well

A man admitted to stabbing and killing his wife and son in Phoenix two days after the alleged crimes were committed because he feared he may have transferred HIV to his wife and didn't think his son would cope without his parents.

"I killed my wife and I killed my son; I can't kill myself," Euguene Maraventano told a 911 dispatcher, according to court documents obtained by The Phoenix New Times.

Maraventano has since been arrested.

The 63-year-old told a detective that on Thursday, he stabbed his wife Janet with a 14-inch kitchen knife while she was asleep in their bedroom.

Maraventano told the detective he was a frequent visitor of prostitutes while working in New York and believed HIV was transferred to him and that he feared he might have given the virus to his wife, who recently had tests for cancer, which were negative. The statement didn't officially say wheteher or not Maraventano or his wife was positive for HIV.

Police told the Associated Press that Maraventano told detectives he decided to kill his son, who was stabbed twice when he opened his bedroom door after he killed his wife, because he didn't know how the son would cope without his parents.

Maraventano said he thought the son was mentally disabled because he didn't have a girlfriend, couldn't get a job and played video games all day, the statement said.

He admitted that after he killed his wife and son, Maraventano attempted to kill himself, but failed multiple times. He would wait to contact the police until Saturday, which was two days after the killings that took place on Thursday night.
