Twitter To Launch Music Service This Weekend With Coachella Music Festival; App To Recommend Trending Songs

Twitter is scheduled to launch a music service on music.twitter.com, in which Twitter users can discover trending music and artists.

The news that Twitter would be getting into online music comes after CNET learned that Twitter acquired music discovery service 'We Are Hunted' and was working on a music app to help people find new music. 'We Are Hunted' is a San Francisco based music startup that tracks the most popular songs across the web and social media.

The launch of Twitter's music service was scheduled to coincide with Coachella Music Festival this weekend.

We Are Hunted wrote on its website, "While we are shutting down wearehunted.com, we will continue to create services that will delight you, as part of the Twitter team. There's no question that Twitter and music go well together. Artists turn to Twitter first to connect with the fans, and people share and discover new songs and albums every day. WE can't wait to share what we've been working on at Twitter."

We Are Hunted originally was launched in Australia in 2009. It creates playlists that can be streamed in sequence as a reflection of what people are streaming online. It currently skews toward underground music, according to Billboard, but the company also had a Mainstream chart filled with popular songs.

Twitter's entry into the music industry could become one of the world's most popular music apps for discovery of new songs and artists.

The sign-in button on the site leads to an authorization request for an app called 'Trending Music Web.' Stephen Phillips, the founder of We Are Hunted, has recently been tweeting songs from said app. The tweets link to tracks on SoundCloud and Rdio, suggesting these music services will also be part of Twitter Music.

Although the #music site's sign-in button isn't functional at the moment, the site will probably go live very soon.

All Things Digital has reported that Twitter music would go live on Friday, but again, the launch could occur at any point this weekend during the Coachella music festival.
