Carnival Ship Fails Health Inspection, Flies Found In Kitchen Buzzing Around Raw Food

The Carnival Cruise Ship Fascination failed an inspection from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Out of a score of 100 Fascination failed with a score of 84. For a cruise ship anything below an 86 from the CDC is considered a failing grade.

According to USA Today and The Christian Science Monitor the CDC inspectors found a number of problems, (over 44 to be exact) which resulted in the cruise ship's failing grade.

Health code violations included, not enough chlorine in the cruise ship's water park. The salad bars were not properly protected by sneeze shields and insufficient lighting for cleaning "food related" areas.

Another health inspection violation was a number of small flies were seen buzzing around raw hamburger meat and a kitchen counter where "dry food waste was discovered." Inspectors also found a baby cockroach in the kitchen.

According to a statement made by the Carnival spokesman Vance Gulliksen to USA Today, Carnival cruise ships rarely fail inspections.

""In the past five years, no Carnival ship has failed a U.S.P.H (U.S. Public Health) inspection and the fleet's average score during that time period is 97. The average over 20 inspections already conducted in 2013 is 97.2."

The Carnival cruise ship Fascination was inspected on February 21. Eleven days after the Carnival ship Triumph was disabled at sea for 5-days after an engine room fire. During the 5-day ordeal passengers had to go without basic essentials, which included working toilet bowls.

According to USA Today Carnival has requested a re-inspection. The cruise ship company claims "corrective action was taken immediately" and they corrected all the CDC's issues.
