5 Killed In Crash Off Florida’s I-95, Dead Includes 3 Teenagers

Florida’s I-95 left five people killed in crash, including three teenagers, after their car was hit by another vehicle that jolted through an interstate exit ramp, the state’s authorities said and reported by the Associated Press.

The driver of a 2008 Mercedes is believed to have been speeding as he exited Interstate 95 and ran a red light in Riviera Beach, which is five miles north of West Palm Beach, a little after midnight. This is according to Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Tim Firth.

Twenty-one-year-old Jabari Kemp’s vehicle slammed into a 1994 Lexus, which was carrying five people, the youngest, is 14 and the oldest is 22. The impact of the crash ejected four people from the car, as only one passenger was wearing a seatbelt, according to the lieutenant.

Four of the people that was ejected from the Lexus was pronounced dead on the scene, a fifth person died after being taken into the hospital.

According to Frith, the event is “every parent’s worst fear.” He said that “the families right now are the main concern.”

Individuals killed in the crash were: Makita Campbell, 14; Shonteria Grimsley, 17; Jason Mahlung, 21; and Christina Oliver Joseph, 17, all of Riviera Beach, in South Florida. The 22-year-old man who was killed in the crash has not yet been identified.

Kemp was taken into St. Mary’s Hospital and is in serious but not life-threatening condition. Frith said that troopers are conducting a complete traffic homicide investigation on the incident. No charges have been filed but Frith said that Kemp’s blood will be checked for any indications of drug or alcohol.

He added that, “we’re not ruling out anything at this point.”

The two young men in the Lexus had been at an apartment complex until around 11:30 p.m. Friday, according to Frith. Sometime thereafter, investigators believed they picked up three girls who were at the back of the vehicle. Troopers did not know as of press time where the party of five was headed.

Frith said that Kemp was driving at a “high rate of speed” as he exited the ramp and crashed on the Lexus. Debris from the crash struck a third vehicle, but the driver was not injured.

Kemp’s family could not be reached for comment.
