Teen Girls Use Social Media To Threaten High School Classmates Over Prom Dresses

At some schools, teenage girls are taking pre-prom aggression to a whole new level.

High school seniors who will do anything possible to make sure another classmate isn't wearing the same dress as them are now using social media to mark their fashion territory. The New York Post reports that students are now using social media sites like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to post photos of their gowns of choice, but some girls are taking the fashion competition a bit too seriously.

"Bitch Don't Steal My Dress" and "Steal My Prom Dress and I'll Knock You The F--k Out" are just some of the names used for the online prom dress groups on social media sites, while a Brooklyn Tech prom page on Facebook greets users with the statement, "Welcome to the page where you tell people you'll physically hurt them over formal wear."

However, other girls use social media to post pictures of their desired outfits in order to get feedback from their "followers" and make sure they're not selecting a fashion dud.

"I talk to them constantly," said Victoria Molinari, who attends Staten Island's CSI High School for International Studies. "I think I'll get more honest opinions from strangers than from people I know in real life."

For students like Anna Lin, a senior at Staten Island Tech, getting approval on her dress from social media sites helped confirm that she made the right selection.

"I got a lot of likes, and it felt really good. It gets us much more excited and hyper for prom," she said.

Most students say that while they don't want to wear the same gown as one of their peers, there typically isn't a competition among studens to be the best dressed of the night.

"There's really no competition on who has the prettiest dress," said Lulin Peng, a Stuyvesant High School senior. "The only thing you can think of is how beautiful every girl will look in their dresses."
