Boston Marathon Explosions At The Finish Line Kills Two People And Injures 23 Others So Far

There were two explosions during the 117th running of the Boston Marathon Monday afternoon, injuring at least 22 people, killing two others near the finish line of the race.

The blasts occurred a few seconds apart on opposite sides of the street, CNN reported. The first left "a big plume of smoke" hovering over the area, around Boston's Copley Square; the second occurred perhaps 10 seconds later, according to CNN.

The explosions occurred about 2:45 p.m., about an hour after the first of the race's nearly 27,000 runners had crossed the finish line. The race was stopped after the explosions as was subway service into the area.

Boston police tweeted that 23 were injured and two have been confirmed dead, following the explosions at the finish line.

Onlooker Josh Matthews said he heard the blast, then saw police running toward the scene.

"We just heard a lot of sirens, and people were kind of frantic, and it was a bad situation, so we got out of there," he said.

A spokeswoman for Massachusetts General Hospital said four patients were being treated there.

"There was an explosion, police, fire and EMS are on the scene. We have no indication of how many people are injured," a spokeswoman for the Boston Police Department said.

A spokesman for the Boston Marathon told reporters that no one would be allowed in or out of the hotel that was serving as headquarters for the event

Chris Despres told ABC News that a third bomb was found inside a hotel in the area, but couldn't confirm it for sure. He also said that the bombs came just a few seconds a part.
