Pat Summer Dies At 82 From Cardiac Arrest But His Legacy Is Remembered By Players, Partners And The NFL World [VIDEO]

Pat Summerall, the man who called 16 Super Bowls, died Tuesday at 82-years-old from cardiac arrest in Dallas as he recovered from surgery to repair a broken hip.

One of the legendary voices of the NFL, Summerall at one time, played in the NFL as a kicker with the Lions, Cardinals and Giants. His commentary on the other hand didn't go unnoticed as Summerall was inducted into the American Sportscasters Association Hall of Fame in 1999.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell tweeted that Summerall's "voice was treasured by millions of NFL fans for more than four decades" -- and "always represented the essence of class and friendship."

When Summerall retired from the NFL in 1961, he moved into the commentary booth, where he wouldn't leave for another four decades.

Summerall called more Super Bowls than any other commentator during his career with CBS and FOX.

The hall of famer's most recognizable commentary partner was John Madden. The two were partners for 22 years.

Madden called Summerall a "card-carrying good guy" and a "damn shock" of the death of his former broadcast partner in an interview with the Los Angeles Times.

"He was so solid and a good friend and a real pro," Madden told the Times, who last worked with Summerall in February 2002, at Super Bowl XXXVI. "He was always up, always had a joke. He was low maintenance for everyone.

Madden praised Summerall's knowledge of the game.

"You know in TV some of these guys have all the numbers and stats and notes? Pat would come to a broadcast with nothing. It was all in his head. He didn't have anything. Could you see another play-by-play guy today doing that?"

Sumerall called other sports during his career, including golf. He called The Masters on CBS in 1994. He called some college football and hosted a show that featured "the star of tomorrow."

Growing up in Lake City, Fla., Summerall spent his final years living in Southlake, Texas.

Fellow longtime commentator Dick Vitale tweeted, "Pat Summerall has passed-RIP-envied him as I only wish I had his gift to say so much without talking so much."

Former Super Bowl champion and MVP Aaron Rogers tweeted out his appreciation for Summerall.

"I will always remember Sundays in my youth watching the NFL, listening to Pat Summerall and John Madden. Classic voice and play by play.
RIP."
