Little League Shooting Canceled Games In North Vallejo, CA, Vehicle Riddled With Bullets After Field Dispute Turned Sour

A little league shooting in California caused the games to be suspended until safety concerns are met. The shooting interrupted the baseball game with players from 5-6 years old after a ballpark dispute turned extremely ugly.

According to KTVU.com, the shooting occurred at a tee-ball game played by the young Little League players in North Vallejo, CA Wednesday night.

When the gunfire erupted, all the children were told to get down on the ground. Some of the kids curled up underneath the benches, said Little League coach Felisa Luna.

The coach described hearing dozens of shots that sent people running in panic from the baseball field.

Two men were seen arguing in the parking lot and after one drove away, the other simply opened fire.

According to Vallejo Police Lt. Lee Horton, “He riddled the victim’s vehicle with bullets. The victim was able to get out of the area without being hit.”

Little League President Greg Reason said one of the people involved in the shooting may have been a parent of a player. The lack of certainty on the identity of the shooter has caused Reason and the league to suspend the game.

KTVU.com reports that the board is calling all families together for an emergency meeting to discuss safety in a neighborhood known for violence.

Reason said, “One option would be we go across town, and play.” He added, “We will find a way for these kids to play ball and enjoy their childhood.”

The bullets from the shooting near the Little League game, flew not only to the ballpark, but also at a nearby Boys and Girls Club where kids gather for after school activities.

One parent said that she was glad the games are on hold, although her son is disappointed that he cannot play Thursday.

Laticia Bivins, a Little League mom, said, “"They want to be able to go out there and play, and not worry that someone's going to get shot, a lot of kids are scared of that.”

Luna said, “Where can you go? Where can your children go? They can't go to school without the threat. This is all these Vallejo kids have, and they love it."

Because of the shooting, there are 200 children in North Vallejo League who will miss more than a dozen games the next couple of days.

The gunman is still on the loose and is described as a mixed-race man in his twenties and weighs approximately 250 pounds. He was armed with a semi-automatic handgun.
