Divinyls Singer Chrissy Amphlett Dead At 54 After Years Of Battling Breast Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis [VIDEO]

Lead singer for the Australian rock band Divinyls, Chrissy Amphlett, has died at age 52 in her New York home on Sunday.

The Divinyls singer was battling breast cancer and multiple sclerosis, but lost that battle over the weekend. Chrissy Amphlett's husband confirmed her death in a statement.

"Christine Joy Amphlett succumbed to the effects of breast cancer and multiple sclerosis, diseases she vigorously fought with exceptional bravery and dignity," her musician husband, Charley Drayton said.

The Divinyls singer was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2007. MS is a disease that attacks the central nervous system. The disease is progressive and does not have a cure. Symptoms show up in patients in different forms. A person with MS may go years before being diagnosed. Severe symptoms include paralysis or loss of vision, according to nationalmssociety.org.

"Chrissy's light burns so very brightly. Hers was a life of passion and creativity. She always lived it to the fullest. With her force of character and vocal strength, she paved the way for strong, sexy, outspoken women," Drayton added.

The Divinyls released six albums between 1982 and 1996. Their fame peaked in 1991 when they released the single "I Touch Myself." The song was at the top of all the major music charts. Reaching number 1 in Australia, number 4 in the US and number 10 in the UK.

The Divinyls singer was famous for her unique voice and onstage performances. Her stage cloths were made up of schoolgirl uniforms and fishnet stockings.

Fans of the now dead Divinyls singer went on the band's Facebook page to express their sorrow and condolences to Amphlett's family.

Robert Mullinax posted, "Rest now you sweet soul."

"No voice like hers and never will be again...RIP...Chrissy," writes Kelly Hart.

Rodney Burgess says, "My heart goes out to all Chrissy's family and friends. I know no words will ever diminish the terrible overwhelming pain, Anguish and grieve you must be feeling. Time will heal some of this but not all.....The pain that is left you should cherish as it says you are very, very special and shows how much love you had for this wonderful special lady."
