Man Uses Infant Son As Shield In Police Standoff

An Oregon man used his infant has a shield when police surrounded his home, believing the robbery suspect was armed. The police were responding to a robbery when they saw the suspect, identified as Raleigh Reynolds. The burglary suspect saw the police, jumped a fence and shut himself inside a house.

The police believed the man to be armed and surrounded the home but did not enter. Reynolds made several attempts to escape before making the decision to use his own infant as a shield.

During the police standoff, a woman exited the house, later identified as Reynolds sister. There is no information suggesting the woman had anything to do with the burglary or Reynolds' other criminal activity, which according to reports includes buying drugs.

Still believing Reynolds was armed, the police watched as the thief exited the house carrying an infant in his arms. Reynolds walked toward police while using his infant son as a human shield in case the police should fire.

Various reports say a police negotiator was able to talk Reynolds into hand the infant over and surrendering to police.

The infant was not harmed and was handed over to family members at the scene.

According to UPI.com, "Reynolds was found to be unarmed, and was booked into the Clackamas County Jail on the burglary charge, obstructing governmental administration, endangering welfare of a minor and resisting arrest."
