Lauryn Hill Sentence For Tax Evasion Postponed With More Than $500,000 Owed To The Federal Government [VIDEO]

A federal judge postponed the Lauryn Hill sentence for tax evasion Monday when Lauryn Hill admitted to not paying federal taxes on $1.8 million earned from 2005 to 2007.

Lauryn Hill pleaded guilty last year to not paying federal taxes on $1.8 million earned from 2005 to 2007. At that time, her attorney said she would pay restitution by the time of her sentencing. It was revealed Monday in court that Hill has paid $50,000 of a total of $554,000, according to the Associated Press (AP).

U.S. Magistrate Judge Madeline Cox Arleo criticized Lauryn Hill, even though the sentence was postponed. Judge Arleo reportedly scolded Hill for relying on the promise of a recording contract to pay the tax bill, according to the AP.

"This is not someone who stands before the court penniless," Arleo said to Hill's attorney, Nathan Hochman. "This is a criminal matter. Actions speak louder than words, and there has been no effort here to pay these taxes."

The eight-time Grammy Award winner has enjoyed a successful career both as a solo musician and a member of the Fugees. Hill, 37, has also had an acting career, which could help pay for the tax evasion.

Lauryn Hill sentence has been pushed back to May 6.
