YG Family Members And Scooter Braun, 'Is It A Good Idea?'

When Psy signed with American talent manager Scooter Braun last year, the pairing made headlines around the world. Braun has long been regarded as the man behind Justin Bieber and other popular acts The Wanted and Carly Rae Jepsen.

At the time of his contract with the Korean mega-star, Psy had already started on his journey to the top with the hit "Gangnam Style." Wanting to engage the American audiences further, the partnership with Braun was the obvious way to do it.

Psy credits Braun with getting him name recognition across the states and most likely had a big role to play in the various appearances he had in the US limelight.

All well and good for a cross-cultural phenomenon like Psy, whose record-breaking single was catapulted across the world by YouTube, but how much of his popularity was actually fueled by Braun?

Promotional activities are still predominately handled by Psy's agency YG Entertainment, and as a manager not producer, Braun has no influence on the music-making process. It appears to be more of a partnership for public clout than anything else.

So when Scooter Braun flew to Seoul a couple weeks ago for Psy's Happening concert at the World Cup Stadium, it was not very surprising that he would also take a meeting with YG Entertainment's CEO Yang Hyun Suk. After all, the two probably had a lot to discuss for international promotions and marketing for Psy and his newest song "Gentleman."

It is also not altogether surprising that Psy would want to introduce his manager to fellow label-mates G-Dragon and CL, as the two are wildly famous and successful in their own right. While Psy and "Gangnam Style" were spreading across America last year, GD and CL also crossed the ocean on US tours with their groups Big Bang and 2NE1.

Many people have been speculating that Scooter Braun is in talks to sign the other YG Family acts, and while it certainly would not hurt any, we are left wondering what he can bring to the table?

Before "Gangnam Style," Big Bang and G-Dragon pulled in the majority of profits for YG Entertainment, with 2NE1 doing their fair share of weight-pulling.

They are already famous around the world, albeit in a niche market. Is Scooter Braun the man to bring them to popular American stardom?

Maybe yes, maybe no. There is no doubt Braun is good at what he does. He is also very highly respected in the industry. But with Psy as his only experience with Korean music, perhaps it is not the best gauge of his abilities in the genre.

How does one even go about marketing someone like G-Dragon, or mainstream K-Pop for that matter, to an American audience? Many other agencies have been trying for years to break into the US market, and until Psy no one really had. It might just be the time for the Scooter Braun magic touch, but it all remains to be seen.

What do you think - is Scooter Braun the key for K-Pop stars to make it in America?
