Zach Braff Kickstarter Campaign For 'Garden State' Follow-Up Film 'Wish I Was Here' Aims For $2 Million

Zach Braff launched his own Kickstarter project to raise money for a film that he hopes to star in and direct on Wednesday, April 24. Braff was inspired by the success of the Veronica Mars Kickstarter campaign, which aimed to raise money for the production of a Veronica Mars movie based on the popular TV show.

Zach Braff said, "After I saw the incredible way Veronica Mars fans rallied around Kristen Bell and her show's creator Rob Thomas, I couldn't help but think maybe there is a new way to finance smaller, personal films that didn't involve signing away al your artistic control."

The film Braff is intending to fund through his Kickstarter campaign is a dramatic comedy called Wish I Was Here. It was co-written by Zach Braff and his brother, Adam.

Zach Braff said that it is a thematic sequel to the actor's highly acclaimed first film, Garden State. The plotline follows a 30-year-old father/husband/struggling actor.

Just a few hours after the campaign was launched, the film has already raised more than $754,651, almost half of the goal amount. Braff's pitch video is convincing and entertaining, and features Jim Parsons, Donald Faison and Chris Hardwick. The video teases a cool soundtrack and reveals that some of the film will take place at Comic-Con.

As with all Kickstarter campaigns, there are incentives to entice donations. Some include T-shirts, early access to the soundtrack, advance screenings, signed merchandise, and even opportunities to appear in the film.

Zach concludes, "I promise I'll put everything I have into it, and I won't let you down."

Braff's Kickstarter campaign ends on May 24. If the donations keep coming at this rate, there's no doubt that he will meet his $2 million goal. However, if he doesn't raise that amount in 30 days of the campaign's inception, he gets none of it. If he overachieves, he still gets to keep the money raised.
