Hawaii's Spirit Of Aloha Makes It Least Stressed State According To Gallup Poll; West Virginia Voted Most Stressed State

Hawaii's spirit of Aloha is impacting its residents in a positive way. A new Gallup poll labels Hawaii as the least stressed state, while West Virginia was listed as the most stressed state. The results of the Gallup poll on stressed states came from telephone interviews conducted with 350,000 americans in all 50 states and the District of Columbia throughout 2012, ultimately giving Hawaii the distinction of being the most chilled out among all states.

Only 32.1 percent of Hawaiians polled in the survey reported experiencing stress "a lot of the day yesterday." Those low numbers even made Hawaii stand out against the second-least stressed state in Louisiana, where 37.6 percent of pollers reported experiencing high stress the day before. Mississippi came in at No. 3 with 37.9 percent, Iowa at No. 4 with 38.1 percent and Wyoming at No. 5 with 38.6 percent.

A staggering 47.1 of West Virginians reported high levels of stress the day before, giving the state top honors in the poll. West Virginia already has several other unflattering associations attached to its name, including the unhappiest state and fattest state.

Rhode Island was named the second-most stressed out state with 46.3 percent of pollers reporting being frazzled the day before. Kentucky clocked in at No. 3 with 44.8 percent, Utah at No. 4 with 44.6 percent and Massachusetts at No. 5 with 43.4 percent.

However, some of the numbers didn't entirely add up. Utah consistently ranks as one of the most stressed states, but also clocked in at No. 3 in terms of enjoyment. And while Mississippi is one of the least stressed states, it also has among the highest levels of poverty and lowest income rates in the country.

Regionally, the Northeast and Midwest were the two most stressed out areas of the United States. Pacific Northwest states Oregon and Washington also generally recorded high levels of stress.
