Hongdae Around the World: Korean Indie Rock Knocks On The World's Doors

Indie rock bands who have flourished and made their living in front of Hongik University-the famous playing grounds for many musicians-are making their way overseas. Riding on the popularity of Psy and K-Pop, the lesser known genre is attempting make their presence felt as well.

Seoul Sonic, a Korean Band International Tour team, concluded its month-long North American tour. Go Liverpool, another such team, will head out to England for two weeks.

No Brain, one of the most popular rock bands in Korea, was introduced in England's 'Guardian' and United States' music media 'Spin.' Seymour Stein, a legendary music industry entrepreneur who invested in Madonna and Warner Brothers Records vice president, personally attended one of No Brain's live performances and praised their music. He was quoted as having said he could not believe No Brain has not made it to North America yet.

With increased exposure of the talented Korean indie bands, record labels and agencies overseas are expected to make their moves and we may see other genres of K-Pop expanding their influence beyond Asia.
