Fantasy K-Pop Collab: Aziatix + Frank Ocean

Korean-American R&B/hip-hop trio Aziatix may not be K-Pop exactly, but they are certainly close enough to have developed a significant fan following within the K-Pop community.

The first-generation trio has made quite the impact since their official debut in March 2011 with the single "Go" and the release of their self-titled EP two month later. The instant global notoriety gained Aziatix an Mnet Asian Music Award for 'Best New Asian Artist Group,' landed them at the top of US iTunes charts, and scored them a record contract with Cash Money Records.

"Go" displays each of the elements each member brings to the group - Flowsik with his deep, husky rap rhythm, Eddie's powerful, ballad-belting voice, and Nicky as the great connecter, bringing harmony to Aziatix's sound.

American R&B sensation Frank Ocean got his start early on as a ghostwriter for many high-profile singers such as John Legend and Justin Bieber. In 2010 he joined hip-hop collective Odd Future and the following year self-released a mixtape, nostalgia, ULTRA.

The mixtape received rave reviews from critics despite having no formal promotion, and Ocean was well on his way to international stardom. He got the attention of major hip-hop superstars Kanye West and Jay-Z, both of whom praised the young vocalist and in August 2012 he was nominated for four MTV Video Music Awards including Best New Artist.

nostalgia, ULTRA, and in particular the lead single "Novacane," shows off Ocean's unique R&B stylings while focusing on themes of personal reflection, relationships, and social commentary.

"Novacane" is about a girl who makes a living by doing pornography and spends time using anesthetic drugs recreationally. It is a simple, melodic track that highlights Ocean's smooth voice with hints of synthetic beats that ease into the background.

As the newest members of the Cash Money family, we can expect a lot of Aziatix collaborations in the near future - they are label-mates with some of the hottest names in music such as Drake, Lil Wayne, and Nicki Minaj.

A collaboration with Frank Ocean would give Aziatix an opportunity to take a small step out of the mainstream and into some deeper lyrical meaning. The mashup could create something very profound and attention-grabbing.

Ocean is well known for his songwriting abilities as well as the boundaries he pushes with his own music - add that together with the almost unreal talent possessed by the members of Aziatix, and you've got yourself a hit.

Striking balance with a combination of voices, moving from the smooth pop-ballad to the straight-edge rap, is what Aziatix is known for - and Frank Ocean would be able to add further depth to the dynamic.

The collaboration would center around this mixture of elements - thoughtful lyrics, sultry voices, and a hip-hop element to drive it all home.
