No Undisputed Champion on K-Pop Charts, 'Free for All'

There is no undisputed champion in today's K-pop charts.

With heavy influx of new releases by big name artists, rankings are rearranging themselves each day, sometimes even every hour.

Since Psy's "Gentleman" dominated all music charts within an hour of its release, other number one songs that followed, such as Jo Yong Pil's "Bounce" and Roy Kim's "Spring, Spring, Spring," all took several hours to get to the top. And when they finally arrived there, holding on to the number one spot for more than 3 days turned out to be quite elusive. Jo Yong Pil's "Hello" and Roy Kim's "Spring, Spring, Spring" have jockeyed for the top spot for the last week, but with the comebacks of SHINee, 4minute and T-ARA N4, competition has become even more fierce.

With heightened competition, climbing up the ranks has become more time consuming. 4minute's "What's Your Name?" first entered the charts outside the top 10 and has steadily made its way near the top. For a dance song, which usually receives a rapid and rather short-lived attention from the public, such trend is quite unusual.

In most k-pop charts as of May 1, Roy Kim's "Spring, Spring, Spring," 4minute's "What's Your Name?" and T-ARA N4's "Countryside Diary" are battling for the top spot.

As if the competition were not intense enough already, there will be more big stars coming back to the K-pop scene in May. Sexy icon Lee Hyori, Shinhwa and 2PM are all slated to stage their comebacks sometime in May. That can only mean good news for the fans. So let us sit back, relax and enjoy the show.
