Reese Witherspoon Speaks Out On Arrest: ‘We Are So Sorry’

Reese Witherspoon is speaking out about her April 19 arrest when she was charged with disorderly conduct. On "Good Morning America," Reese called the incident "one of those nights."

Witherspoon and husband Jim Toth went out to a restaurant in Atlanta, "and we had one too many glasses of wine. We thought we were fine to drive and we were absolutely not, and we are so sorry and just so embarrassed... We know better and we shouldn't have done that," she explained.

Reese Witherspoon said they should have called a cab, but "poor judgment" led them to drive instead. "We made a mistake, and it was something that will absolutely never happen again," Reese said on the show.

The actress apologized for her treatment of the police officer. "I was so disrespectful," the Oscar winner said. "I have police officers in my family. I work with police officers every day. I know better. It's just unacceptable."

According to reports, she said to the police, "Do you know my name?" in order to try and get out of trouble. Many fans found this unlike the Reese Witherspoon they know and love.

The actress admitted she said many things to the officer that she regretted.

"I have no idea what I was saying. That night I saw him arresting my husband, and I panicked. I said all kinds of crazy things. I said I was pregnant. I'm not pregnant. I said crazy things," Reese told George Stephanopoulos on the live show.

Reese admitted that the hardest and most embarrassing part of the incident was telling her children -- Ava, 13; Deacon, 9; and Tennessee, who is seven months old.

"You have to say when you make a mistake, you have to take responsibility," the actress said regretfully. "And we are taking responsibility and doing everything in our power to make it right. You just have to be honest with them. That was definitely the hardest part."

She said, laughing, that the biggest lesson learned was: "When a police officer tells you to stay in the car, you stay in the car."

"I think I've played a lawyer so many times in movies, I think I am a lawyer - and clearly I'm not a lawyer. So, I learned a lot," she continued.

Reese added that said she had spoken to Atlanta police to offer her apologies. Her husband was charged with a DUI.
