Apple Offers $10,000 Prize to User who Downloads 50 Billionth App

Apple will give $10,000 to the lucky person who downloads its 50 billionth App Store download. This milestone for the company is being marked by a contest that will give one fateful winner an App Store gift card worth $10K. The next 50 app downloaders after number 50 billion will also get a $500 App store gift card each.

The Apple App store launched in 2008 and now has around 775,000 iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch apps. The revenue from these apps has grown to $2.2 billion, and accounts for 74 percent of total earnings for the company.

Another prize for the same amount was offered in February of last year to celebrate Apple's 25 billionth App Store download. The winner was Chunli Fu of Qingdao, a city in eastern China.

Don't go download crazy just yet: the contest will only register 25 downloads per account a day. Users also must be at least 13 years old to be eligible for the gift card.

Last month, the company celebrated another landmark. April marked a decade since Apple's launch of the iTunes music store after Napster was shut down.
