Gold Medalist Dead: British Olympian Andrew 'Bart' Simpson Dies While Training In San Francisco Bay

British double Olympic medalist, Andrew "Bart" Simpson, was pulled out of the San Francisco bay after a 72-foot catamaran capsized, trapping Simpson under the water for at about 10 minutes.

Doctors both in the water and on the shore could not revive him after he was freed from the wreckage. At the age of 36, Simpson was pronounced dead at St. Francis Yacht Club, where Simpson was transported immediately after being pulled out from under the capsized boat.

The boat capsized during a routine practice with the Swedish team 'Artemis Racing' for the 34th America's Cup. Simpson served as the team strategist for Artemis Racing.

"The entire Artemis team is devastated by what happened," stated CEO Paul Canyard in a statement posted on the team's website. "Our heartfelt condolences are with Andrew's wife and family."

However this is not the first time such an accident has occurred in the San Francisco Bay. Just six months ago, Larry Ellison's 72- foot catamaran capsized.

Sadly, Simpson is the second sailor to have died during training for the America's Cup. Back in 1999, Martin Wizner of the Spanish Challenge passed away after being hit in the head by equipment, making many wonder if the San Francisco Bay is too dangerous and volatile of a place to compete.

According to The Independent, the cause of the accident is still unclear. Some have speculated that wind may have been a key factor in the accident.

Andrew Simpson won a gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and silver in the 2012 Olympics, both in the Star class. Simpson also won gold in the World Championships in Brazil in 2010.

Simpson went by the nickname "Bart" after the cartoon character Bart Simpson and is survived by his wife and their son.
