The Tsarnaev brothers 2011 murders involved Tamerlan Tsarnaev's supposed once best friend and two others.

It has been an unsolved murder-mystery that took place on September 11, 2011. The three men were killed when their throats were slit and marijuana was dumped on them inside a Waltham, Mass. apartment.

Two news organizations are reporting that local investigators are delving into forensic evidence and cell phone records that may link one or both Tsarnaev brothers to 2011 murders.

Fox News cites sources with knowledge of the investigation, saying that Tamerlan's cell phone "was used near the murder scene on the day of the triple homicide and his fingerprints were found inside the apartment.

One of the three men murdered was Brendan Mess. The 25-year-old was considered the best friend of Tamerlan, but the two were reportedly having a falling-out because Tamerlan wasn't liking some of the decisions of Mess and the two others who were also murdered. Raphel Teken, 37, and Erik Weissman, 31, was also murdered with their throats slit and marijuana left on their remains.

The Tsarnaev brothers were the alleged Boston Bombers who set off two different bombs at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Over 260 were injured and three others were killed. When photos leaked and revealed the faces of the brothers as suspects, they killed a security guard and were involved in a chase from the police. A shootout ensued and Tamerlan died from the gun wounds. His brother, Dzhokhar, escaped but was found the next night inside a boat of a patron's backyard. He is now in federal custody.

Friends of Tamerlan noticed a change of his personality following the deaths in 2011. They noted that Tamerlan did not show up at the funerals, especially of his former best friend. This helped lead to another investigation of the 2011 crimes and could possibly link the brothers to the incident.
