Sony Xperia ZR Revealed: 4.6-Inch Phone With Underwater Camera Release Date In June [PHOTO]

Sony has revealed a new phone in the Xperia line: the 4.6-inch Sony Xperia ZR. The Xperia ZR shares many of the features of Sony's 5-inch Xperia Z, which was released in April to impressive reviews.

The Sony Xperia ZR will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. It comes with an HD Display, a 13-megapixel camera, 2GB of RAM, and a SnapDragon S4 Pro quadcore 1.5GHz processor.

The Xperia ZR can go underwater to capture photos and HD videos. One upgrade from the Xperia Z is the water depth at which the phone will still function; the ZR can be dunked in 1.5 m of water for up to 30 minutes, while the Z can only descend to 1m.

Calum MacDougall, director of Xperia Marketing at Sony Mobile Communications, said, "The Xperia ZR pushes the boundaries on where and how consumers can use the full potential of their smartphone. By combining Sony's leading camera technology with the highest level of water-resistance, you will never miss another moment."

Sony announced, "The phone is not designed to float or work submerged underwater outside the IP55 or IP58 classification range that may lead to your warranty being void."

The ZR has 8GB of internal storage, but the memory can be expanded with a micro SD chip up to 32GB.

The Sony Xperia ZR comes with "Stamina" battery technology, which shuts down high energy-consuming apps that aren't being used.

The Xperia ZR is scheduled to launch in the second quarter of 2013, probably in June, according to the Telegraph UK. However, Sony hasn't yet revealed the cost of the new phone or the countries to which it will be released.
