Fastest Growing Baby Name List Includes Arya, Inspired By "Game Of Thrones", Other TV-Influenced Names

The fastest growing baby name list indicates that entertainment, particularly television, has greatly impacted how people name their children. The most popular baby names change throughout the years, but one of the fastest growing baby names this year is Arya, inspired by HBO's Game of Thrones.

Arya jumped from the 711th most popular name in 2011 to the 413th in 2012, according to the United States' Social Security website. But the popular TV drama "Game of Thrones" isn't the only entertainment-related name that grew. Raelynn went from 496th most popular in 2011 to 341st in 2012-a 155-point improvement. A contestant on "The Voice" likely inspired parents naming their babies Raelynn. Skyler, the name of an American Idol contestant, also grew in popularity.

During last year's rankings, Twilight movie names grew enormously - Jacob and Isabella shot up to the #1 spots. Isabella was still the 4th most popular name in 2012.

Boy's names seem to be less influenced by TV and movies, but some character names became more popular. Gunnar rose from the 500th most popular to the 451st.  Gunnar's a character on "Nashville". And "Nashville" impacted people a lot, apparently - Avery and Juliette, two other characters' names, climbed in the rankings also.

Inexplicably, Major jumped from 988 to 483, and isn't a name used on any shows or other media sources have been able to explain thus far. The Social Security administration suggests that it might be to honor people in the military. King and Messiah were the fastest-growing boy baby names.

In 2012, the most popular baby names for girls overall was Sophia, for the second year in a row. Next were Emma, Isabella, Olivia and Ava. For boys, Jacob was on top-- again, for the 14th straight year. Next were Mason, Ethan, Noah and William.
