Suspect ID’ed In Shooting At New Orleans Mother’s Day Parade: Akein Scott, 19, Wanted By Police [VIDEO]

Suspect was ID'd at New Orleans Mother's Day parade shooting that left 19 people injured. Akein Scott, 19, has been identified as the shooter by multiple sources.

New Orleans police and federal authorities are currently searching for Scott. Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas has officially identified the suspect in the Mother's Day shooting as Akein Scott, 19, of New Orleans. Survellance camera footage that was released, along with a $1000 reward, helped identify Scott-- several tips from the community identified him as the suspect in the footage.

"The people today chose to be on the side of the young innocent children who were shot and not on the side of a coward who shot into the crowd," Serpas said.

Scott is accused of opening fire at a Mother's Day parade in New Orleans, wounding 19. Serpas told press late Monday that officers would be searching continually into for Scott, whom he called "no stranger to the criminal justice system." Akein Scott has previous arrests on both firearm and drug charges.

Police Superintendent Serpas asked Scott to give himself up. "We would like to remind the community and Akein Scott that the time has come for him to turn himself in."

A photo of Scott was displayed on the podium that Serpas spoke behind. "We know more about you than you think we know," he said.

Serpas said that evidence gathered at the scene was giving them "very good leads to work on."

Gun violence, poverty, and urban blight have long plagued New Orleans. Residents hope that, in the wake of tragedy, attention will be called to these issues.

A news release from the police states that Akien Scott has been previously arrested for charges of illegal carrying of a weapon, illegal possession of a stolen firearm, resisting an officer, bringing contraband to jail, illegal carrying of a weapon while in possession of a controlled dangerous substance, and possession of heroin. The release did not specify which charges Scott was convicted of.

Serpas told press that it was too early to say whether Akein Scott was the only shooter. Initially, three people were reported as fleeing from the scene. 19 people were wounded in the shooting in New Orleans at a Mother's Day parade, including two children.
