Cliffhanger For “The Big Bang Theory” Finale? 'Howard' Actor Simon Helberg Teases Plot Of Season 6 Finale Episode

While most of the attention Thursday night is focused on NBC's "The Office" finale after nine season, CBS plans to end "The Big Bang Theory" sixth season with a major cliffhanger.

Simon Helberg, the actor who plays aerospace engineer Howard Wolowitz on the sitcom, dropped a few hints about the "Big Bang Theory" finale in an Associated Press interview.

"This time, the adventure is for Leonard," Helberg revealed, referring to Johnny Galecki's character as an experimental physicist. "Howard finds Stephen Hawking's crew is sending out an expedition to the North Sea, and he gets Leonard a job, going on a boat for four months."

The teaser in the finale will be whether Leonard choses this expedition or his girlfriend Penny, played by Kaley Cuoco.

"The obstacle is Penny and Leonard have never been better," Helberg continued. "So, is he really going to leave her for four months?"

His roommate Sheldon, played by Jim Parsons, also doesn't want to be left behind by Leonard's adventure.

The series identifies itself with nerd culture, and most fans eat it up. However, the show likes to play with viewers' emotions when it comes to season finales. The season four finale revolved around the entire friend circle realizing Penny accidentally slept with Leonard's best friend Raj, played by Kunal Nayyar. Last season's finale featured Howard marrying Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) before his trip into space.

This mixture of brains and emotions has been very successful for the show, which had 20 million viewers on its highest-rated episode in its six season this January.

The show has already been renewed for a seventh season. Helberg says he thinks they have a successful future ahead of them.

"I think we're all having a good time," Helberg told the AP. "And I think the show is far from being stale. It is kind of constantly -- not reinventing itself -- but just expanding on these characters. So, yeah, I think we're going strong for now, as long as people keep inviting us in."
