Former dictator dead: Jorge Rafael Videla dies at the age of 87 Friday while serving a life-sentence in prison.

Videla was the military junta leader who oversaw political killings and forced disappearances during Argentina's so-called Dirty War against dissidents in the mid-1970s, according to the New York Times. The former dictator dead: Jorge Rafael Videla died in Marcos Paz Prison in Buenos Aires, where he was serving a life sentence for crimes against humanity.

The former dictator dead, Jorge Rafael Videla was the senior commander in the Argentine Army, which he then became the de facto President of Argentina from 1976 to 1981.

In December of 2010, Videla was sentenced to life in a civilian prison for the deaths of 31 prisoners following his coup d'état. In July 2012, Videla was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the systematic kidnapping of children during his tenure.

He also had illegal concentration camps, where he would kill families.

Videla died of natural causes in his sleep Friday.

Several Argentine politicians commented on his death: Deputee Ricardo Gil Lavedra of the Radical Civic Union commented in Spanish, but it was translated in him saying that Videla will be remembered as a dictator.

Hermes Binner gave his condolences to the victims of his government. Hernán Lombardi, ministry of culture, praised that the Argentine democracy that had trialed and sentenced him. Ricardo Alfonsín praised as well that Videla died while serving his sentence in prison.

Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, Argentine recipient of the 1980 Nobel Peace Prize, commented that nobody should rejoice on any death.
